How your central air conditioning works
Your home’s central air conditioning system uses a closed-loop cycle. When the temperature inside gets hotter than what’s set on the thermostat, the system springs into action. It pulls in the warm air from your home through the return ducts, all while filtering out pollen, dust, dirt and other particles. The filtered air then passes over the cold evaporator coil, turning the liquid inside into gas and effectively cooling the air. The blower fan kicks in, distributing the freshly cooled air through the ductwork, making sure it circulates throughout your entire home.
The refrigerant gas is expelled from your home through copper tubing into the outdoor unit’s compressor. In the compressor, the gas gets squished and sent to the unit’s condenser coil. Using the condenser, a fan sucks in outside air, helping to soak up heat from the house and then, get rid of it. This whole process also turns the refrigerant back into a liquid. The liquid refrigerant then goes back through the copper coil to the indoor unit, where it waits for the next time your air conditioner kicks in.
